The Padel Partnership: Positioning That Wins More Points

A practical guide to moving as a pair, protecting space and making better decisions during padel matches.

Two padel players working together on an indoor court

Padel is a partnership sport. Strong individual shots help, but pairs win consistently when they protect space together and make the next decision from a balanced position.

Move like a unit

Imagine an invisible rope connecting you to your partner. When one player moves toward the net, the other should advance too. When one player is pushed back by a lob, both players usually need to recover.

This does not mean standing the same distance from every ball. The player closest to the ball applies pressure while the partner adjusts to protect the middle and cover the likely reply.

Protect the middle

The middle creates uncertainty when communication is late. Agree before a match who takes balls through the centre, then keep talking as the point develops. A clear “mine”, “yours”, “leave” or “switch” is more useful than silence followed by a last-second swing.

Earn the net

The net is an attacking position, but reaching it without a good approach ball can expose both players. Move forward behind a deep lob, a low ball at your opponents’ feet or a shot that forces them to defend from behind the service line.

At the net:

  • Split-step as your opponent makes contact.
  • Use compact volleys rather than large swings.
  • Recover toward your partner after playing wide.
  • Be ready to retreat together when a lob passes you.

Review the pair, not only the shot

After losing a point, ask whether the pair was in the right place before blaming the final stroke. Better spacing often turns a difficult shot into a routine one.

Match coaching is useful because positioning decisions happen quickly and are easier to understand in a live point. Book a session with Shayaan on Playtomic to work on your partnership at Ace Padel.
